HDT Grazing Intern -

Happy Dancing Turtle is excited to share a great internship opportunity for someone interested in entering the agricultural conservation field, or for an aspiring farmer. We are looking for a summer intern to assist with adaptive grazing management on multiple farms and ranches in support of Up the Creek Meats, a water quality focused, local foods marketing and educational effort to our downstream consumers.  This position includes job shadowing with local resource professionals, a great opportunity to form important contacts with others in the conservation field.  The student will also learn from practical, hands on experience under the guidance of leading producers in our area that are practicing adaptive grazing management.  The consumer education component of this position will provide experience in public speaking and further develop social networks. 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Collect and record pasture condition and forage production data.

  • Assist producers with planning paddock size/stocking density and rotation schedules.

  • Assist producers with livestock management; temporary fencing; paddock moves and stockmanship

  • Facilitate discussion among farmers and ranchers to build local cohorts.

  • Provide outreach and education to downstream consumers.

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution (minimum or part-time) or can document enrollment for the fall semester of 2021

  • Understanding of the soil health principles, basic knowledge of adaptive grazing management, animal husbandry/stockmanship, common forage plants and less desirable vegetation.

  • Independent, self-motivated, working knowledge of Microsoft Office/Excel, good communication skills and be able to pass the organization's background check.

  • Passion and interest in sustainable and resilient living are a plus!

Compensation: $12 per hour.
